About James

Since early 1995, when his family moved to Highland Mills from Queens, James Skoufis has called Woodbury home. The reasons for relocating were similar to those that many others share in town: a better quality of life, an education that strives for nothing short of excellence, and a strong, friendly community, to name a few. Since then, while the landscape has dramatically changed, the values of the area certainly have not and Woodbury remains the greatest place to live, work, go to school, and raise a family.

James came up through the Monroe-Woodbury district and ultimately graduated from the High School in 2005. A National Honor Society member, the core ideals of the organization - scholarship, leadership, service, and character - have remained with him to this day. James' pursuit of higher education took him to DC's George Washington University where, with the fortunate help of scholarships and student loans, he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science. A year later in 2008, he returned to New York and has since earned a Master's Degree from Columbia University.

Working every semester during college in order to help pay for school, James, in the process, gained a wealth of governmental experience. Some of his past employers have included Congressman John Hall, Center for American Progress, Social Science Research Council, and Benenson Strategy Group; James presently works as a project manager for a security integrator in New York City.

James has sought to serve and volunteer for his community in a number of capacities, such as his time spent as a Legislative Ambassador for the American Cancer Society. He is also a proud member of the Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Societies and continues to contribute to the academic field of political science through conducting original research and presenting at conferences.

After serving for a number of months as an appointed member of the town board, James won a full term on November 3, 2009. He has since worked on the town budget, the Central Valley Pond renovations, and serves on a number of committees that aim to make Woodbury a greener, cleaner, safer, and more affordable town. In addition to a strong focus on constituent services, James writes a monthly e-newsletter, the Woodbury Bulletin Board, which people can subscribe to on his website.

James' family includes his mother, father, and two sisters: Donna and Melissa Colombo and George and Anna Maria Skoufis. Donna, previously of Highland Mills, was the proprietor and instructor of the successful local dance school Studio 32.
